St. Andrew's School
Building Project Funding Appeal
Final Report

The new administration and IT suite building was officially opened by the Bishop of Chelmsford on 5 January. The building is now fully occupied and its facilities are greatly appreciated by all at the school. Conversion of the former air raid shelter and old toilet block into a useful modern facility was only made possible by the generosity of the communities of Little Horkesley and Wormingford and other supporters.

The final cost of the project is estimated to be about £70,000 of which £22,000 (about 30 per cent) will have been contributed from local resources on behalf of the governors. All of this money has been managed within the School Building Fund Account held by Mr. Richard Lindsey, Treasurer of Wormingford PCC. The main sources of these funds are as follows:

Little Horkesley PCC, £4,000; Wormingford PCC, £4,000; Wormingford Parish Council, £200; Crown Inn, Wormingford, £602; "Wormingford Chamber of Commerce", £400; sponsorship of Bill Weatherill's walk from Lincoln to Wormingford last Easter, £3,197; Wormingford Christmas Bazaar 1999, £300; donations in memory of the late Mrs. Sylvia Saunders and the late Mrs. Betty Tufnell, £3,087; and donations from individuals, £5,230. With interest accumulated so far, the amount raised is more than £21,000. In addition, recovery of tax from individual donations made under the Gift Aid scheme should raise a further £1,300.

The generosity and goodwill of all our donors is gratefully acknowledged by the school as is the support of Mr. Lindsey in looking after the Building Fund account. The account will be closed once the Gift Aid tax refund has been obtained.

The 450th View Day at St. Bartholomew’s

Since 1551, the ceremonial visitation of St Bartholomew’s Hospital in Smithfield, London (founded 1123), has taken place annually. This was carried out by the Treasurer and governors; the visitation began at 6 or 7 a.m. and consisted of an inspection of the premises; a long day culminated in a grand dinner in the evening. By 1610, the practice of visiting the wards also was well established.

Originally held in March, View Day has been held on the second Wednesday in May for longer than anyone can remember.

The pattern of the day too, has changed. The prime visitor is the Lord Mayor of London, usually accompanied by the Aldermanic Sheriff. Wards and departments put on exhibits and demonstrations; the famous Square is en fete. There used to Evensong at the end of the day in the hospital church of St Bartholomew the Less. However, many snuck off! So, the Dean, Professor Lesley Rees and the then Vicar of Barts (whose name escapes me) decided to re-jig the proceedings. The day now begins - not at 6 or 7 am thankfully, but around midday, with worship in St Bartholomew the Great - all of 60 yards from "the Less", in the presence of the Masters and Clerks of the Livery Companies. After this the VIP’s go to a posh lunch in the Great Hall. During the afternoon the Mayoral and Sheriff’s parties tour wards and departments, which are also open to friends and visitors.

A parish bus made the trip in 1996, and such a good time was had that a repeat has been requested. So we will leave Wormingford Village Hall at 09:15 (Cars may park at the Hall) on Wednesday, 9th May, leaving Bart’s to return at 16:30.

We have a 35 seater Kings coach to fill. Fare £10.

Names to the Vicar, please, as soon as possible.
